About the client

Hayward Baker: solicitors in Fareham, Hampshire.

Hayward Baker is a law firm based in Fareham, Hampshire. Its website says it provides conveyancing and probate services and handles personal injury claims, and now says Hayward Baker is part of Biscoes Solicitors. Firms of this kind are rooted in their local area, and much of their work comes from people who are dealing with a difficult time in their lives, whether that is an injury, a bereavement or a house move.

For law firms, personal injury is an incredibly competitive field, and its leads often take months or even years to conclude. That shapes how the advertising has to be run: tightly, with cost control at the centre.

The reasons are easy to see. Someone who has been injured and is looking for a solicitor will usually search with specific words and may contact several firms. Many practices, large and small, want the same enquiries, and clicks on legal terms are often expensive. A firm cannot simply spend more to be seen, because a claim takes a long time to resolve and pays back slowly, so every pound spent on advertising has to be justified well before the case is closed.

There is a further need that is particular to the law. A solicitor's advertising has to read as trustworthy and clear, because the person on the other side of the screen is often anxious and wants to feel that the firm understands their situation. An ad or page that overpromises, or that sends someone to the wrong service, wastes the click and does the firm no good.

DPOM first signed with Hayward Baker for Google Ads in November 2018, and a conversion rate optimisation service followed in January 2019. A steady, measured source of enquiries, rather than a burst of expensive clicks, was what a firm in this position needed from its marketing.

The challenge

A sustainable source of personal injury leads, without increasing costs.

For law firms, the personal injury field is incredibly competitive, and leads often take months or even years to conclude. Because of this, digital marketing campaigns need to keep to tight constraints on ROI, and cost control is paramount.

Hayward Baker approached DPOM with a brief to provide a sustainable source of leads for its personal injury services without increasing costs. The firm had tried Google Ads before with mixed results, so we began with an audit and set out what we expected to be able to achieve.

What the brief asked for

  • A sustainable source of leadsPersonal injury enquiries that keep coming, not a burst that fades.
  • Without increasing costsBecause leads take so long to conclude, the cost of winning each one could not rise.
  • A clear plan from the startAn audit first, along with expectations of how we could provide results.

What we did

Audit first, then Quality Score and conversion rate.

We started with an audit and a clear statement of what we could achieve, then worked on Quality Score and conversion rate.

The approach, step by step

  1. Step 1Audit the accountHayward Baker had tried Google Ads before with mixed results, so we began with an audit and gave expectations of how we could provide results.
  2. Step 2Maximise Quality Score to minimise costsCPCs for legal services are generally high, so we set to work to maximise Quality Score to minimise costs.
    More detail

Quality Score is Google's rating, out of 10, of how relevant your keywords, ads and landing pages are to what people search for. It is one of the things that affects the price you pay per click and where your ads appear.

  3. Step 3Increase the conversion rateAt the same time we worked to increase conversion rates. Getting more conversions from no additional ad spend meant raising the conversion rate and lowering the cost per conversion.

The results

More impressions, more clicks and a lower cost per click.

The campaign showed up in 316% more impressions, and the cost of each click fell by 24%. Clicks rose by 349% and engagement rose by 301%.

More clicks at a lower price per click means more visitors for the same money, which fits a brief that asked for leads without increasing costs.

What each figure means

  • Impressions up 316%The ads appeared in front of searchers 316% more often.
  • CPC down 24%Each click cost 24% less.
  • Clicks up 349%349% more people clicked through to the website.
  • Engagement up 301%The case page reports engagement as a single figure, up 301%.
