Case study: MP Antique Furniture · Google Ads and SEO
A Google Ads and SEO case study: how an audit of both channels cut cost per conversion and grew online sales for MP Antique Furniture, an antique furniture restoration and sales business.
About the client
MP Antique Furniture, known as MPF, restores antique furniture and sells online. Its objective when it came to DPOM was to grow its antique furniture restoration services aggressively, in addition to its online sales. Restoration and retail are two different kinds of customer. One is a person with a treasured piece that needs skilled work, the other is a buyer looking for something distinctive to put in their home.
Antique furniture is a specialist market, so it matters who the ads and search results reach. A click from someone looking for the wrong kind of furniture still costs money.
The market is also an unusual one. Buyers of antiques often know what they want, whether that is a period, a style or a type of piece, and they search for it with some care. Restoration enquiries tend to come from people who value craftsmanship and want to know that the work will be done properly. Both groups respond to detail and to a sense of authenticity, which a broadly targeted campaign rarely conveys.
Selling furniture online brings its own pressures. Large retailers advertise heavily on general furniture searches, and a smaller specialist cannot and should not try to compete on those terms. Its advantage lies in knowing the subject and in offering pieces that cannot be found in a high street shop, so its advertising and search presence need to be aimed at people looking for exactly that.
For a business like MPF, a well-aimed campaign matters more than a large one. Paid search and organic search each have a role, and checking both together shows where money is being spent on the wrong audience and where the right audience is not being reached.
The challenge
MP Furniture approached DPOM with the objective of aggressively growing its antique furniture restoration services, in addition to its online sales.
It asked for a full audit of its Google Ads account, in addition to its current SEO campaigns. DPOM promptly audited both, and provided a detailed overview with a video audit on how the campaigns could be improved.
Notably, the Google Ads account was targeting broadly, so it was attracting traffic from people looking for flat-packed furniture from retailers such as IKEA and Argos. That is clearly not MPF's target market.
What we did
We started with a full audit of the Google Ads account and the current SEO campaigns, and gave MPF a detailed overview, with a video audit, of how the campaigns could be improved.
The audit identified that broad targeting was attracting people looking for flat-packed furniture from retailers such as IKEA and Argos, who were clearly not MPF's target market.
The results
6 months later, MPF ranks higher in organic search results than ever before and has seen a 70% improvement in cost per conversion. This has rapidly increased the profitability of its accounts, and MPF is now in a position to scale.
The figures published on our original case page are a 70% CPA improvement, a 140% increase in online sales, an 85% increase in organic traffic and a 45% decrease in bounce rate.

A video audit is a recorded walk-through of an account or website, explaining what we found and how it could be improved, so you can watch it in your own time.
Cost per conversion, also called CPA, is the ad cost divided by the number of conversions, such as sales or enquiries. A lower figure means each conversion costs less to win.
If ads or pages are matched to searches that are too broad, they can attract people who were never looking for what you sell, and every one of those clicks still costs money.
No. Every account and website starts from a different place. These figures are what happened for MP Antique Furniture, not a promise of what will happen for you.
