How to boost your Instagram reach

How to boost your Instagram reach
hand touching digital tablet, social media concept

Since Instagram started sorting posts on users’ feed with an algorithm, marketers far and wide have noticed a decline in their organic reach and engagement.

But that doesn’t mean that’s to be the case for you. In fact, it could be possible for you to reach more of your followers now, as a result.

Here’s how you can do just that;

Understand the algorithm

Even though Instagram uses a timeline style algorithm these days, optimal posting times are still so relevant. I cannot stress this enough. Posting at peak times can generate engagement which will, in turn, cause the algorithm to place your posts higher and higher up your followers’ feeds.

Videos

Photos, as a rule, get more likes than videos. That’s just how it is. Videos, however, have been proven to receive more comments and shares on average! Last year, Instagram themselves found that the video watch time increased by more than 40% over six months! You don’t need me to tell you that with a growth rate so substantial, it would be well worth experimenting with videos to see if your audience reacts well.

Competitions & Discussions

Using call to action posts such as “Send us your best selfie with our product” etc can be a great way to get easy engagement. The same can be said for competitions, these usually get more engagement, because, well, who doesn’t want something for free?

User generated content

Since the change to an algorithm, Instagram considers users’ relationships when “ranking” content on their feeds. This means that building relationships with users by posting content that they themselves have sent to you, could in turn place you higher on users’ feeds.

Quality over quantity

I myself live by the adage, quality over quantity. It is better to post one piece of stunning content, than 20 pieces of trash. With quality, comes positive response! By posting quality, relevant content and eliciting likes and comments from your followers, you will, in turn, be placed higher on their feeds.

So, in summary

Social media algorithms are in place to encourage and solicit genuine, positive behaviour and posting. These positive behaviours can include shares, appreciation, quick replies etc.

Be sure to post content that will encourage your followers to put these behaviours into action, and your Instagram presence will grow.
